Observatorio Astronómico Ramón María Aller

The Astronomical Observatory Ramón María Aller of the University of Santiago de Compostela was founded in 1943 by Dr. Ramón María Aller as a continuation of his private Observatory in Lalin (province Pontevedra, Spain).

From that time on until his death, his research was published in numerous international and Spanish scientific journals.

Among the research areas developed by the Observatory staff one must mainly note the study of double and multiple stars   a subject first introduced in Spain by R.M.Aller.

Since 1982, the Observatory has developed 13 Research Projects, which have allowed its scientists to travel to many astronomical centres in Europe, America and Asia and to collaborate with colleagues worldwide. Four Agreements on scientific cooperation have been signed as well as different scientific meetings and workshops organized.

Currently, the International Astronomical Union Commission 26 Information Circular is being edited quarterly at the Observatory.

The Observatory's current instrumentation includes the original refractor donated by its founder as well as a modern speckle interferometry camera and an occultation photometer.

Intense teaching activity is carried out at the Observatory where University students studying Astronomy do their practical classes. The Observatory's Library is one of the most complete of its kind in Spain.

In recent years, the Observatory has promoted a great number of cultural and  public outreach activities. It publishes an annual Memoria and continuously informs the mass media about astronomical events and phenomena .

The two weather stations (one manual and the other automatic) located in the Observatory's garden collect meteorological data corresponding to downtown Santiago de Compostela on a daily basis.

Between 1991 and 2002 the Observatory in collaboration with the Galician Government (Xunta de Galicia) has developed a project for the construction of the Astronomical Observatory at Monte Faro and its complementary installations.
