                                IN MEMORIAM

As many of you will know, Dr. Sylvain AREND, one of Europe's most noted
astronomers, died on February 18th 1992. Dr. J. Dommanget of the
Belgian Royal Observatory has requested that this sad occurrence be
    noted in the Information Circular.

Born in Robelmont, Luxemburg, in 1902, Sylvain Arend studied at the
Free University, Brussels, where he obtained his doctorate in Physical
Sciences and Mathematics with the highest honours. In 1928 he obtained
a grant to work as an assistant at the Belgian Royal Observatory, with
which he continued to be associated until his retirement in 1967 as
Head of the Department of Astrometry and Celestial Mechanics.

Arend's main interests were astrometry and astrometric photography.
The fruits of his extensive work in this field, summarized in his 80 or
so papers, included the discovery of a nova (1952 Scuti), three comets
(one of them the well-known Arend-Roland comet), numerous variable
stars and fifty or so asteorids, as well as observations of the
positions of literally thousands of other asteroids. Of particular
relevance to IAU Commission 26, he was also responsible for putting new
life into work on double stars at the Royal Observatory; following
contacts with USA specialists during visits to the Yerkes, Mt. Wilson
and McDonald observatories, he set up the Royal Observatory's 45 cm
equatorial telescope, and went on to devise a new method for
    calculation of double star orbits.
