This beautiful property is already included in the city maps from 1796 and registered with the name of Horta de San Martín (S. Martin´s orchard). This fact shows that it belonged to the Monasterio de San Martín Pinario (San Martin Pinario´s Monastery) beside, which is still operating nowadays. The property is a recint surrounded all along by a strong stone wall, which divides drastically the inside and the outside, creating its own world.

The Centre for Advanced Studies and The House of Europe of the University of Santiago de Compostela provides mechanisms which allow the debate and spread of ideas among the university community and towards society. It also serves to stimulate collaborations at international level, in particular in Europe. The transnational and cross disciplinary approaches are especially important as they can provide the necessary critical mass for quality research, and allow the exploration of all ideas of research. A further objective of the Centre of Advanced Studies is to help place our scientific community in a leading position, especially in rapidly developing fields.

The Casa de Europa (House of Europe) is a university residence hall to lodge teachers from other universities all over the world, as they come to Santiago de Compostela, more and more frequent, in order to join our teaching and research activities. The main aim of the University of Santiago de Compostela is to offer a historical university residence hall for participants involved in academic activities, so that there will be an international projection of our university.
The Casa de Europa has got six rooms for a double or single use, and it has also several meeting places, which provide the best intellectual atmosphere either for meetings and for lecturers themselves, since they can enjoy their accomodation while participating in congresses, conferences, courses or forums sponsored by the University of Santiago de Compostela.
