The ALFA programme is a programme for cooperation between Higher Education Institutions in the European Union and South America. The experience gained in previous phases of the programme and the establishment of other European programmes in terms of cooperation with third countries has led to ALFA III being directed towards other projects that involve actions originating from an academic field but aimed at society and the economy, favouring regional integration, socioeconomic development and social inclusion of the benefitting countries.

The ALFA III programme, the latest call launched by the EU, is directed at higher education networks and at other relevant institutions in the field of cooperation. The actions include combined projects involving European and South American institutions and implementation of structural measures as regards reform of the higher education systems in South America. A third line supports projects that develop complementary measures to promote visibility and report the results of the projects.
