The University of Santiago de Compostela has created its own system of grants for predoctoral stays destined for teachers and researchers from South American centres. The aim of this programme is to meet the priority demand from the South American Higher Education system, which is to train researchers to doctoral level. This initiative also fosters and strengthens the important academic and research links between the USC and these countries.
Under the current ruling of the European Space of Higher Education (ESHA), students may begin to undertake doctoral research after carrying out a doctoral course or an official master’s course. Many of the teaching staff at South American universities meet these requirements, and are qualified to undertake research within a doctoral programme.
The Interuniversity exchange doctorate, or sandwich doctorate, programme is based on short periods of supervised research –of up to 3 months a year- at the USC during a number of years, along with use of internet as a vehicle for continuous training during the entire period of the programme. This is compatible with work responsibilities of lecturers and researchers from South America, enabling them to complete a doctoral thesis.
The aim of this programme of grants is to finance stays by lecturers and researchers from South America to enable them to undertake doctoral research and complete a doctoral thesis in cooperation with the USC. The number of places offered in the academic year 2009-2010, will vary between 25 and 35, depending on the number and quality of the applications received.
