Description:

The "Gumersindo Busto" Interdisciplinary Centre for American Studies (CIEAM) has been approved on February 17, 2005 by the Governing Council. This culminates a long period of procedures which began in 2002 promoted by the Department of American History.

The name of the Centre clearly reflects its vocation. On the one hand, it is born as the necessity of joining all members of the university community with an interest in American Studies as manifested in the wide participation of the different fields of knowledge. On the other hand, its activities are also dedicated to the memory of the promoter of the Americanism at the USC, Gumersindo Busto.

Aims:

The aims were established in the Rules and Procedures as well as in the Establishment Report of the Centre. Emphasizing the ambitional nature of the service, they aim to:

  1. Create a framework of reference within the Galician Autonomous Region in general, and the USC in particular in order to promote scientific research, and academic and cultural dissemination of issues related to the American reality, with emphasis on strengthening common bonds with our community.
  2. Impel the opening of spaces as well as the creation of the necessary instruments for the interdisciplinary development of research, analysis, debate and cultural dissemination activities, as established in the Galician and National Projects R+D. This initiative will create a path of open bonds between Latin American realities and the Galician society, specially for students, businessmen, teachers, researchers and communicators, and sharing the obtained achievements with them.
  3. Foster basic research, qualified human resources training, and strong research teams in Latin Americanist studies in accordance with the aims established in the Galician and National Projects R+D to achieve the aims of the Centre.
  4. Support teaching activities in Third Cycle, specialization and summer courses in Latin American Studies (USC and School Galician contexts).
  5. Stimulate academic, professional and research activities between the USC and the academic and research institutions in Latin America, the United States, Canada, Europe or other countries which share similar aims and objectives.
  6. Stand as a centre of reference to the USC by canalizing proposals of collaboration and organization of scientific activities (national or international nature) related to Americanist studies. Such activities are the result of internal and external, public or private initiatives.
  7. Give scientific advice, in the framework of the Centre's competences, to public institutions, companies or individuals.
