By means of the Decree 72/2001 of March 22nd, DOG of 9 April 2001, the Institute of Agricultural Biodiversity and Rural Development of the University of Santiago de Compostela is founded on an agreement between this university and the Agriculture, Stockbreeding and Agrifood Policy Regional Department, the Environment Regional Department and the Economic and Social Development Institute of Lugo (INLUDES).
The main aims of this institute are: to study the implementation of new opportunities of rural development in the Galician Region through research on biodiversity and the introduction of forest, crops, and cattle raising in the Galician temperate and subtropical areas; to open new working trades for students of agricultural degrees, and for student and teacher exchange programs, especially in Latin-American countries; to collaborate with similar centres, both European and Latin-American, in the training of specialized technicians by developing third cycle programs; finally, to be a permanent forum to celebrate meetings and discuss activities which might benefit the Galician country.
