Spanish, Galician and other language courses

The University of Santiago de Compostela (USC), through its various centers and services, provides many appealing courses in diverse foreign languages to the university community and to interested outside persons. Our language classes offer flexible hours, alternative methods of attendance and an array of supportive resources. Importantly, each one of our courses culminates with an internationally recognized diploma that demonstrates language proficiency.

Our courses are designed to help support USC students who wish to study at foreign universities, and likewise, to aid foreign students interested in discovering our university and the rich languages and cultures of Galicia and Spain.

Centre (CLM)

The Modern Language Centre (CLM) was originally founded in 1975 as the Language Institute. Today, the CLM has expanded to organize language courses at campus of USC in Santiago and Lugo. Although we may have grown, our goal of helping students achieve oral and written fluency in foreign languages has remained the same.

The CLM offers intensive, semester, and yearlong language courses to the university community and to any outside persons over 16 years of age with an interest in foreign language acquisition.

Our courses are organized according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Language. For the duration of the academic year, we provide courses in Spanish as a foreign language and an array of English classes at many different levels. Also, in the month of July, the CLM offers an ample number of intensive two-week courses in various foreign languages.

Since 1992, the CLM has also been a designated testing center of the Cervantes Institute. We offer the B2, C1, and C2 exams of Spanish as a foreign language, issued by the Spanish Ministry of Culture, Language and Sport. Foreign students can take the exams twice yearly, in May and November, for which the CLM offers preparatory courses. The CLM is also the designated testing center in Galicia for the foreign language equivalency exams given by the Goethe Institute (German), CILS (Italian), and NOKEN (Japanese).

The instructors at the CLM actively participate in academic congresses, write and publish didactic materials, and they also organize cultural activities and language exchanges to help integrate students of different nationalities. All of their work is done as a means of furthering the educational experience of students interested in learning more about the diverse languages and cultures of the world.
