Description
Attached to the Vice-rectorate of Research and Innovation, the Herbarium is a centre dedicated to promoting research. It is based on a scientific collection, in continuous expansion, of plant specimens which are carefully dried, labeled and conveniently treated for its permanent preservation. The SANT acronym, which reflects its international licence, is widely recognized as a major centre in the international botanical community.
The primary aim of the Herbarium is to record all scientific material representative of the Galician regional flora in particular and of other iberian, continental and world regions in general. Its research work focuses on the collection of plant specimens which are catalogued and stored according to an orderly and systematic botanical classification. They are also dried, preserved, identified, labeled and computerized.
The Herbarium is opened to the scientific community. Thus, its main sporadic activities are the collaborations in teaching programmes of first and second cycles. It also participates in the "Flora Ibérica" project apart from being an outstanding participant in the Iberian Herbaria project, in collaboration with the Global Biodiversity Information System (GBIF).
