Erasmus

The action regarding higher education of the SOCRATES Programme, named Erasmus, seeks to enhance the quality and reinforce the European dimension of higher education by encouraging transnational co-operation between universities, boosting European mobility and improving the transparency and full academic recognition of studies and qualifications throughout the Union.

Erasmus awards mobility grants for many thousands of university teaching staff and students, but also attends to strengthening the European dimension of studies for the students and teachers who do not participate directly in the exchanges. In this context, it gives special attention to the intensive programmes and to the elaboration of new programmes of studies as well as to the improvement of the existing ones through the transnational co-operation and the development and consolidation of thematic paneuropean networks.

Erasmus is open to all types of higher education institutions in all academic disciplines and all levels of higher education study up to and, including Doctorate studies.

The University of Santiago de Compostela offers more than 1200 exchange places annually with 263 institutions of higher education from the whole of Europe. The Call for applications is open from November, 22nd to December 22nd to begin the periods of mobility during the year 2005/06.

The length of the stay ranges from 3 months (minimum) to 12 months (maximum).

All selected students receive an economic help from the part of the European Commission and the USC. This economic help is compatible with any other grant (including those from the MEC) that the student was enjoying. In the same way, they can put themselves forward for the complementary grants that the Xunta de Galicia offers annually.
