To provide students with knowledge on the biochemical properties of the soil, their determination and their use for the diagnosis of the quality of the soil.
ContentsContents
Theoretical contents:
Soil organic matter and their functions.
The degradative soil function.
Biochemical properties of the soil: General and specific parameters.
Detailed study of the main biochemical properties (1): basal respiration, microbial biomass, ATP, dehydrogenase and catalase activities.
Detailed study of the main biochemical properties (2): hydrolytic enzymes of the cycle of C, N, P, and S.
Soil physical, chemical and biological degradation and its influence on the biochemical properties.
Soil quality and use of the biochemical properties to estimate the loss of quality.
Practical classes
Determination of basal respiration of soil.
Determination of the catalase activity
Determination of the urease activity
Determination of the aryl-sulfatase activity
Basic and complementary bibliographyMain bibliography

Additionally, students must utilize scientific papers on the subject and whose search will be performed by them (under the guidance of teachers) to learn to become familiar with the bibliographic information search systems.
CompetenceInterpretation of biochemical properties of soil
Diagnosis of the quality of the soil by the use of biochemical properties
Interpretation of scientific literature
Determination of soil biochemical properties
Teaching methodology The teachers will use a methodology that allows facilitate the positive interaction between students and teachers. To do this:
a) Each theoretical session will start with a small debate for motivating students of the interest in the topic. Then, the theacher will exposure the theoretical content of the subject introducing issues facing students and will conclude with a discussion in which participate all and extract conclusions to advance in the theoretical knowledge.
(b) A main part of the course will be developed in the laboratories, so that students can apply the knowledge acquired in the theoretical phase, and thus can start in the field of the interpretation of experimental results.
(c) Finally, the students will solve several case studies concerning the evaluation of the quality of soil, preparing reports that will be discussed at a joint meeting with teachers.
Assessment systemContinuous, and considering
a) The active participation of students in the theoretical classes and discussions generated during them, as well as the possible implementation of a final exam (maximum, 50% of the final note).
(b) The attitude and willingness in the laboratory (maximum, 25% of the final note).
(c) The assessment of interest in the resolution of practical cases (maximum, 25% of the final note).
