How is the course divided? When will I have exams? Will I have holiday time?

The course is divided into two semesters. The first semester starts on the second half of September and finishes on the first days of February, and the second semester starts immediately after the first one and finishes on the last days of June. There are two main holiday periods during the courses: Christmas and Easter. Any other holiday dates are informed at the beginning of the year and informed on the course calendar. The examinations period will be just at the end of each semester and the precise dates can be found in this web site.

Do I have to attend classes to pass my exams?

To attend classes is a good recommendation in order to take the maximum profit of your teachers. Although training self-learning is one the general objectives of the universities, in the vast majority of cases plain self-learning has shown to be less effective than combined with the teachers’ advices. Some teachers will explicitly ask you to take part on class time to be passed. You can be asked as well to do written exercises or public exhibitions about one or more contents of the subject. At the beginning of the course, please read carefully the part devoted to the evaluation system (in Spanish: sistema de evaluación) in the program of each subject, since your presence can be compulsory in some cases.

What can I study in the Facultade de Matemáticas?

The Faculty of Mathematics of the USC offers a degree in Mathematics (lasting 4 years) and three postgraduates: Industrial Mathematics, Mathematics, and Statistics and Operational Research. Each postgraduate has one master lasting between 1.5 and 2 years, and one PhD program.
