Professor José Luis Mascareñas Cid, a researcher at the Centre for Research in Biological Chemistry and Molecular Materials (CiQUS) of the University of Santiago de Compostela (USC), was presented with the 2025 Rei Jaume I Award in Basic Research by King Felipe VI yesterday. The award ceremony, held at the iconic Lonja de los Mercaderes in Valencia, was the highlight of several days of events for the laureates.
An international jury, which included five Nobel Laureates, selected Professor Mascareñas for his groundbreaking work in organometallic chemistry, notably for introducing metal-catalysed reactions inside living cells. This research line, developed at CiQUS, paves the way for new chemical tools with applications in biomedicine and biotechnology, underscoring the critical role of fundamental science as the foundation for major advancements.
Throughout the week, Professor Mascareñas took part in a full programme of side events organised by the Rei Jaume I Awards Foundation. On Monday, he participated in a multidisciplinary public colloquium, presenting his innovative work and engaging in a fruitful dialogue with attendees. Furthermore, as part of the post-award activities, he is scheduled to give a lecture today within the Valencian Community to share his knowledge with society and the scientific community.
The Rei Jaume I Awards, regarded as one of Spain's most prestigious scientific honours, recognise exemplary figures across seven categories annually. This 37th edition also served to amplify the message of support for science and research, echoing the foundation's own "España Insert Coin" initiative, which aims to boost private investment in R&D&I as an engine for progress.
The awarding of this prestigious prize to Professor Mascareñas is a source of immense pride for CiQUS. It not only acknowledges individual scientific excellence but also enhances the centre's visibility and commitment to cutting-edge research with international impact. This award solidifies a distinguished career, evidenced by over 250 publications and accolades such as an ERC Advanced Grant from the European Research Council.
