Jesús Rodríguez Otero
Former CIQUS researcher, 2011-2018
Jesús Rodríguez Otero was born in Vigo (Galicia), Spain in 1963. He studied chemistry at the University of Santiago de Compostela (USC), where he graduated with honors in June 1986. He completed his PhD in 1991 under the direction of Professor Miguel A. Ríos at the same University. His PhD studies were supported by a grant from the Spanish Ministry of Education (training of researchers) and they were devoted to the study of the quantum chemical study of intramolecular hydrogen bond and proton transfer. Subsequently, he joined the faculty at the Physical Chemistry Department of the USC: from 1990 to 1994 as assistant professor, and then until now as associate professor.
During a year and a half (1991-92) he carried out a postdoctoral research at the IMIM (Hospital del Mar Research Institute) of the Pompeu Fabra University (UPF) located in Barcelona (Spain), under the supervision of Professor Ferran Sanz. This research was focused on the field of QSAR and more specifically in the study of the electrostatic similarity and its application to serotonin receptor antagonists. The collaboration with IMIM was maintained continuously until 1998.
Beginning in 1993, he began to work on the study of organic reactivity through collaboration with several researchers of the Organic Chemistry Department of the USC, which led to fruitful theoretical-experimental works. This collaboration led to a greater emphasis on the topics of organic chemistry.
Since 2002, one of his fundamental researches is the study of intermolecular interactions, which play a key role in processes related to chemical and biological recognition. Currently, within the so-called supramolecular chemistry, he is devoted to the theoretical study of the interaction cation•••π and the interaction with buckybowls. He is the author of about 80 publications in international peer reviewed journals.
