New technologies (IT) applied to continual training of health professionals in pharmacology

The GI-1685 research group in the Department of Pharmacology at the University of Santiago de Compostela carries out one of its lines of research in the field of Pharmaceutical Care.

The research group has been working since 1996 on a new system of continual training for community pharmacists in the dispensing of non prescription drugs, known as the Pharmacist Training Programme (PTP). The aim of this new system is to constantly up-date the knowledge and skills of community pharmacists, to maintain, develop and improve their professional activities in giving advice about health disorders that can be treated with non prescription drugs and/or by non pharmacological measures.

The implementation of this pilot scheme arose from the participation by the research group in various European projects on the development, testing and implementation of telematic techniques in European Iberoamerican community pharmacies. The projects were: TESEMED I and II, which were included within the 101 best projects financed by the IV European Union Framework Programme, and the INFOPHARMA project, which involved prestigious European groups in the field of pharmaceutical care, as well as groups from Argentina and Mexico.

The group also collaborates with the Galician Official College of Pharmacists and members of the group have participated in associated research studies and in teaching of the continual training courses organized by the College.

From the results obtained by the group in the different European projects related to this line of research, the group has created, along with another partner involved in the projects, a spin-off technology company "Pharmatools Digital Interactive Services S.L.", which offers telematic products specially designed for the continual training of health professionals.

Finally, the group has participated with other members of the University of Santiago de Compostela in applying for ERASMUS MUNDUS funding, within the European Union Framework Programme, to establish a European Master's Degree in Pharmaceutical Care, with the aim of consolidating this discipline in the USC.
