Today's world is made possible largely by advances in chemistry. Chemistry has played a key role in the development of medicines and diagnostic methods to increase expectancy and quality of life. It has also been instrumental in the creation of new sustainable materials and technologies and the implementation of renewable energy sources such as green hydrogen. Contributing to the advancement of knowledge and the progress of society are in the DNA of research in chemistry and this is the fundamental motivation of CiQUS.
The CiQUS is a chemistry research centre but with a multidisciplinary approach from biological chemistry and biomedicine to the development of new molecular materials. It was the first singular centre of the USC to open its doors in 2011. In order to achieve excellent science, the centre has a team of internationally recognised researchers, attracts and trains young talent and in transferring knowledge to society.
Throughout these years, the scientific policy at the centre has made it possible to generate a highly stimulating and motivating environment for scientists. They work in conditions that allow them to approach challenges and far-reaching and high risk projects. Also research of a more fundamental nature, aimed at learning more or creating new science and work that is more oriented towards innovation and proposing solutions to specific social challenges. This combination with rigour and efficiency, is what has made the centre an international reference in the field of multidisciplinary chemistry.
Over the years we have generated methods and technologies that can have an immediate impact on society with countless advances in fundamental chemistry, published in the world's top scientific journals such as Science or those of the Nature group. Specifically, we are proud to support projects such as the search for a vaccine against COVID based on our own technology or the development of new therapeutic techniques based on artificial enzymes to fight against cancer and other diseases. Also working the technological potential of materials such as graphene and others, with possible application in technologies, engineering and new energies... From biomedicine to functional materials or sustainable development make up an ecosystem of research areas that make CiQUS a versatile and highly qualified actor to face a multitude of challenges.
A fertile and robust ecosystem which is celebrating a decade of life and also looking forward with optimism. Why? Because we reach the actual place for the right path. The path of harmony in our structure, our multidisciplinary team, an example of talent and professionalism; our synergies, our infrastructure, a model of innovation, self-demand and accountability; the support of regional, national and international entities; the network of collaboration with centres around the world that offer us to be at the forefront... In short, a perfect gear to continue advancing and placing ourselves among the best multidisciplinary chemistry centres in the world and thus giving prestige to Galicia and our University.
