After several days of intensive work, the Center for Research in Biological Chemistry and Molecular Materials (CiQUS) scientific performance has been supervised by the External Scientific Advisory Board (ESAB). A panel of internationally renowned scientists proceeded with the review of the center’s progress and activity during the period 2019-2022, as part of the 3rd Quadrennial Evaluation. In a very inspiring atmosphere, Prof. Luis Oro, Prof. Janine Cossy, Prof. Miquel Pericás and Prof. Helma Wennemers joined ESAB´s president Prof. Jiménez Barbero for the in-person assessment.
After an internal kick-off session on thursday morning, the members of the panel met with CiQUS directors for an overview of the progress in recent years and discussion on key topics. The programme continued the next day with the interviews with CiQUS researchers and a site visit to the center facilities and laboratories. Conclusions and remarks came in the afternoon, in a session attended by CiQUS Principal Investigators. The board emphasised the excellent progress of the center, highlighting, among other issues, its success in attracting European projects, and particularly European Research Council projects (6 projects in the last 4 years). At evening, the USC Vice-chancellor for Scientific Policy, Vicente Pérez Muñuzuri, joined CiQUS´Directors and ESAB members for dinner to conclude the visit.
The role of the ESAB is central in the CiQUS´ self-demanding organisational model. The board provides valuable inputs for further achievements and progress in the future, through advice on the scientific project and evaluating the centre performance and that of its researchers. We thank all ESAB members for their valuable contributions during these days, and we highly appreciate their support and commitment.
