This year, the awards ceremony of the Royal Spanish Society of Chemistry (RSEQ) took place at the Paraninfo of the University of Seville on October 27. On this occasion, the jury awarded the "Research Excellence Award" sponsored by the chemical company BASF to Diego Peña Gil, Principal Investigator of the Center for Research in Biological Chemistry and Molecular Materials (CiQUS), valuing his scientific career and leadership skills.

In addition, three other researchers were honored with Research Excellence Awards from the RSEQ: Ana Albéniz (Universidad de Valladolid), Igor Larrosa (University of Manchester), and Marisol Martín González (CSIC). Last Friday, during the ceremony, RSEQ awards and distinctions were presented in several categories, with a special recognition for members with 45 years of activity.

Diego Peña's new award adds to the Ignacio Ribas Medal he received in 2018 from the specialized group in Organic Chemistry of the RSEQ. In 2020, the researcher received support from the European Research Council (ERC) through an ERC Synergy Grant with Leo Gross (IBM Research Zurich) and Jascha Repp (Universität Regensburg) to develop an ambitious project focused on single-molecule manipulation (ERC-SyG MolDAM). Today, his group advance in the development of new synthetic methodologies, on-surface chemistry, the synthesis of nanosized polycyclic aromatic compounds and the preparation of well-defined nanosized graphenes.
