Isaac Alonso was awarded with the 2013 Lilly Prize for PhD students

08/08/2013

This award is further recognition of the excellence of young researchers of the CIQUS

The CIQUS doctoral student Isaac Alonso has been awarded by the European Committee for Academic Relations (EUACC) of Lilly Spain with one of the three Lilly Research Awards for Doctoral Students in 2013. Isacc Alonso is developing his PhD in CIQUS, and his area of interest is the synthesis of organic structures related to natural products and derivatives of biological and/or biomedical, which is a fundamental challenge in organic chemistry.

His work at the CIQUS, under the direction of Prof. Dr. Mascareñas and Fernando Lopéz, has allowed the development of new methodologies of chemical synthesis allowing the preparation, in only a few steps, of compounds of biological interest starting from simple and inexpensive materials. Thus, compounds with a high value for organic synthesis are obtained. Those compounds are found in many natural products, such as hormones, or other with interesting pharmacological properties.

Isaac will give a talk of 10 minutes during the awards ceremony to be held at the Lilly Centre for R&D in Alcobendas, next September 27, 2013. Professor Dr. Karl Anker Jørgensen (University of Aarhus, Denmark) will give a plenary lecture.

It should be highlighted the awards and achievements of the younger researchers at CIQUS, i.e. 2012 Lilly Awards for Doctoral Students, 2012 Silver medal from the European Young Chemistry Award (EYCA), SUSCHEM-Spain Awards for Chemistry Young Investigators to the best scientific publication in 2012 (Postdoc category) and the two young researchers (former PhD. students) who were invited to the 63rd Lindau Nobel Laureates Meeting (2013).
