Beatriz Pelaz García has recently been confirmed as new member of the Spanish Young Academy (AJE) after a competitive selection process where less than 10% of the applicants were selected. This way, the CiQUS Principal Researcher becomes full member with 9 other young researchers selected by an international committe integrated by prestigious scientists. In addition to academic achievements, the committe has also considered factors such as the diversity of the candidates and the multidisciplinary of their fields.

Sponsored by the Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación, AJE aims to promote scientific careers among young people and serve as a forum and platform for spanish young researchers. It currently has 30 full academicians, incluiding several European Research Council (ERC) beneficiaries, as well as Princesa de Girona, Ramón y Cajal programme and Rey Jaime I award winners. Since its creation in 2019, the AJE has submitted reports to the Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación on the development of new vaccines or the prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 in different environments, among others.

The average age of the recently recruited members is 38, and Beatriz Pelaz (ERC-Starting Grant) is one of the five women selected. Between them, the new academics have more than 1,000 articles published in scientific journals around the world. The CiQUS PI is co-leading BioNanoTools, a group focused on the development of multifunctional composite materials for applications in biology and medicine. Her lab is working at the interface of materials science, biology and medicine with the goal of producing net generation "smart" materials, having enhanced multifunctional capabilities.
